Shining a light on the art of 16mm film by curating e-Flux criticism articles regarding 16mm film.

1.37:1 is a collaborative publication made from essays, articles and texts found in e-flux Criticism. The publication is focussed on film based texts and mostly 16mm film hence the title for the publication 1.37:1 which is the aspect ratio.

As a team of 4 we collected articles that fitted well together and bundled it within our own love-letter to film. My contributions to the publication are the cover and the article about Harun Farocki’s 4 films. Within the publication you will find small details that hint towards the 16mm film era like the subtle rounded corners and the punch-hole like indicators before each alinea reminiscent of those found along a roll of film.

Some of the pages have been riso printed with white ink on a warm gray almost black paper to replicate the warmth of old film. The contrast between the white and black ink is a tribute to how film was/is developed using negatives.
